Don’t Forget: ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Is Coming to the Biggest Possible Screen Next Spring

This time, Mission: Impossible is getting its due time on IMAX. The way it’s supposed to be seen specially since it’s been shot for IMAX.

The Tom Cruise-led action franchise is getting an extended run in the premium IMAX format.

IMAX has announced that the highly anticipated Mission: Impossible 8 will have a three-week exclusive run in its premium format theaters next year. This announcement comes after the film, previously titled Dead Reckoning – Part Two, faced a significant delay of almost a year. The extended IMAX run is a strategic move to give the film a competitive edge, following the lessons learned from the release of its predecessor, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

Dead Reckoning Part One faced a tough battle at the box office last year. Its release came just a week before the unexpected “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, which saw Barbie and Oppenheimer dominate the box office, effectively sidelining Mission: Impossible. A significant blow was losing its premium format screens to Oppenheimer merely a week after its debut. Despite this setback, Dead Reckoning Part One managed to gross $567.5 million worldwide, a figure bolstered by a $71 million insurance payout due to COVID-19-related production delays.

Bruce Markoe, head of IMAX post-production, revealed that IMAX had initially approached Paramount before the release of Dead Reckoning Part One to suggest a date adjustment that would allow the film a clearer run on IMAX screens. The goal was to give the film a larger share of the premium format audience. However, Paramount chose not to take the advice, resulting in a crowded release window that hampered the film’s box office potential. Learning from this experience, Paramount has now secured an uninterrupted three-week IMAX run for Mission: Impossible 8, ensuring the film maximizes its exposure in premium theaters.

A Title Change for ‘Mission: Impossible 8’

Another significant change is the film’s title. While Dead Reckoning Part Two indicated a continuation, it may have contributed to the previous film’s underperformance. Commentators suggest that the title might have deterred casual viewers, who were less inclined to invest in a lengthy film that ended on a cliffhanger. This mirrors issues faced by other franchises, like Marvel’s initial approach with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as Parts 1 and 2, which they later rebranded to create distinct entities. The new title aims to attract a broader audience by presenting the film as a standalone experience.

With the exclusive IMAX run and a more accessible title, Mission: Impossible 8 is positioned to capitalize on the premium format’s immersive experience, attracting both dedicated fans and new viewers. The series, known for its high-octane action and intricate plots, stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, alongside Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust and a stellar ensemble cast.

As Mission: Impossible 8 gears up for its 2025 release, the strategic adjustments in its rollout reflect lessons learned from past releases. The extended IMAX run promises a more favorable box office environment, while the title change is expected to broaden its appeal. Fans can look forward to another thrilling chapter in the Mission: Impossible saga, optimized for the best possible viewing experience. 2025 will also see Brad Pitt’s Formula One movie and Joker: Folie à Deux hit the screens on IMAX.

Stay tuned for more updates on Mission: Impossible 8 and its exclusive IMAX premiere.

Tom Cruise To Star In Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Next Film At Warner Bros. And Legendary

Deadline exclusive report:

Sources tell Deadline that Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in negotiations for an untitled Alejandro G. Iñárritu film starring Tom Cruise. The project would mark Iñárritu’s first English-language pic since his 2015 smash The Revenant.

The film is produced and directed by Iñárritu with a new script he co-wrote in 2023 with Sabina Berman as well as Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, his co-writers on Birdman, reuniting a decade later. This also marks the first film for Cruise (who will also produce) following the announcement of his strategic partnership with Warner Bros last month. It’s expected Legendary will also produce.

This project is being treated as top secret, with no plot details available other than it being a new original story written by Iñárritu. What is known is that the Oscar-winning director has been taking meetings with a select few actors in recent weeks, with Cruise being one of the first. The A-list star has been hungry to find that next project and moved quickly to get a meeting with Iñárritu once he was made aware the director was moving forward with his next big studio film. As soon as the meeting finished, Cruise was on board.

The project fits in with what Cruise, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and WB studio chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy had in mind when the movie star signed his strategic partnership last month, specifically something that is both original and meant to be seen on the biggest screens around the world.

The film would mark Inarritu’s first major studio film since directing The Revenant, which not only went on to gross more then $500 million at the worldwide box office but also led to his second straight Best Director Oscar win (and Leonardo DiCaprio’s first win for acting). Iñárritu took a break after an exhausting stretch that also included directing his Best Picture winner Birdman. He had been toying with some ideas in 2019 but ultimately turned his attentions to his passion project Bardo at Netflix and tabled his next big studio pic till now.

As for Cruise, while he had spent the past decade making blockbuster tentpoles like his Mission: Impossible films and Top Gun: Maverick, he never has shied away from challenging himself with top-tier directors such as Stanley Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson. While Cruise hasn’t won an Oscar, he has earned four nominations, three of which came for acting, and given Iñárritu’s track record of delivering Oscar noms to actors who have starred in his movies, Academy voters are sure to take notice once this film makes it to theaters.

Cruise and Iñárritu are repped by CAA.

Brand new themes for main site & gallery + Hosting Renewal Drive

The site has a brand new themes for both main site and gallery made by the wonderful Carol at Sin21 Designs. Hope you love as much as do.

I’m also using this post to start the collecting for the Hosting Renewall that happens in August, this year the price rised and I’ll need about US$ 250 for renewing for a year. There’s a donate button on the sidebar where you can use PayPal or use the button below.

I must say I cannot keep the site open without your help. I encounter myself in a deep hole of debt and there’s absolutely no way I can afford it on my own and the only solution will be to close the site for good.

My wish would be to move to a dedicated server (no more gallery issues), but those cost a lot per year and I’d only move if I could get enough to pay for a year in advance and that I’d kept getting donations every month. I found good offers on high popular servers that go from US$ 100 a month to like US$ 150. So it’s a lot of money. Otherwise, we stay at the server we’re at.
